About Nausicaä
Nausicaä is the central character of the epic manga series Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind) by Hayao Miyazaki, and the animated film of the same name.
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä is set in the distant future, in a world ruined by the effects of war. The planet has been engulfed by a poisonous forest, known as the Sea of Corruption, which emits toxic fumes and is inhabited by giant insects. The remains of the human race struggle for survival, as this forest spreads relentlessly across the land.
Nausicaä is the beloved princess of a small country caught in the middle of a power struggle between two waring states. She is a brave, selfless and compassionate young woman, who is willing to put herself in danger to protect those around her. Nausicaä has a strange affinity with all Earth's creatures, including the great insects of the forest, and seeks to discover a cure for the poisons of the forest. She wants nothing more than for humanity and nature to live peacefully side by side.
Nausicaä, as with many of Miyazaki's female lead characters, is a strong role model and her character goes against the normal gender stereotypes that are rife in Japanese comics and animation. She has always been a firm favourite with fans around the world, and still remains a highly influential character - over 20 years after the manga was first published in Japan!
